While Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has abolished parking fees for owners of two-wheelers and electric vehicles, four-wheeler owners, especially those with outstation registration numbers, are in for some bad news.Four-wheelers with city-based registration numbers now pay slightly higher parking fees, while those with outstation registrations must pay twice as much.Chandigarh will now for the first time treble the fees for outstation automobiles. The choices were made during the General House meeting on Tuesday.
Currently, the civic authority assesses a fee of seven rupees for two-wheelers and fourteen rupees for four-wheelers, regardless of the state and registration number. However, according to the authorized scheme, the first 15 minutes of parking in MC’s paid parking spaces will be free for non-commercial, non-electric four-wheelers registered in the tricity (Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula) as well as commercial three-wheelers.However, there will be a Rs.15 tax (up from the present Rs.14) for vehicles left unattended for 16 minutes to 4 hours. A fee of Rs.20 will be applied if the car is left parked for four to eight hours; if it is left overnight, a fee of Rs.10 per hour will be added (see box).
